A passionate and very well written praise for SF-literature. All too many people completely ignore the genre just because there ARE trashy SF-books. But so there are trashy "mainstream literature" books and - in my opinion - a large percentage.
Anyway - if you like books, read this article !

At very few book awards do you find the door manned by stormtroopers. But in that regard, as in several others, science fiction is different. One obvious distinction between the Arthur C Clarke Award, for the best science fiction novel published in Britain the previous year, and the Man Booker is that a lot of people care, a lot.
Of course the authors do, and the publishers, and the agents. But they were not the only people at the cinema in Regent Street where this year's award was announced last week. There were (besides the people dressed as characters from Star Wars), as there would not have been at most book awards, the readers.
